Dapitan City’s Teyatro Dasuliman: Raising the Bar for the Jose Rizal Memorial State University Theater
Teyatro Dasuliman was born out of sheer necessity to home of promising theatre enthusiasts of Jose Rizal Memorial State University, Dapitan City around the same time when the company’s Founder and Artistic Director, Jann Dainver L. Maravilla, joined the institution as a Visiting Lecturer. The company was officially established on November 18, 2016 shortly after the pioneering members of the company went to compete in the Short and Sweet Play Competition during the Mindanao Association of State Tertiary Schools (MASTS) Inc., Games 2016 at Surigao del Sur State University, Surigao Del Sur last November 6-11, 2016.Moreover, Teyatro Dasuliman has been officially recognized by the University as its resident theatre company on September 3, 2018. In its almost six (6) years of humble operation, it has remained steadfast in achieving its vision that is to become a world-class intercultural repertory renowned for its relentless commitment to therapeutic stage productions for the sustainable and holistic development of an individual and the society. This is coupled by the company’s mission that is to produce culture-sensitive, socially-relevant, and context-specific original and adaptation plays through conducting intensive and extensive culture and arts research and adopting eclectic pedagogy for a holistic dramaturgy.More particularly, the company aims to foster arts appreciation through dramatics and stage craft; to raise awareness on socio-cultural issues through relevant and research-based theatre productions; and to contribute to the robust Philippine culture and arts tradition.Since its humble inception to date, the company has already staged 15 short plays, 5 of which are original one-act musical productions, 9 are original one-act straight plays, and only one was a collaborative one-act production. Most of the company’s productions are inspired by the Central Subanen culture and its people, particularly the Subanons of Zamboanga del Norte. Some of the company’s productions have won regional and national awards during the annual Socio- Cultural Competitions of the MASTS Inc. and Philippine Association of State Universities and Colleges Games (PASUC) Games.Furthermore, the company has been consistently engaged in various projects by the National Committee on Dramatic Arts of the National Commission for Culture and the Arts, the Cultural Center of the Philippines, Teatro Europa of the Delegation of the European Union (EU) in the Philippines, TranScript Fellowship Program of the Integrated Performing Arts Guild and the Center for Culture and the Arts of the Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology, the Mindanao Creative and Cultural Writers Group, Inc., and the Performing Mindanao Student Network.Presently, the company is home to over 80 performing artists and creatives working together through the collective passion for theatre-making and desire to responsibly participate in the integrated fashion of artistic truth -telling tradition. The company’s name is a combination of a Sebuano calque of the word ‘theatre’, which is ‘teyatro’ and the least known nickname of Jose Rizal which is ‘Doctor Uliman’ after he went to Germany to practice medicine. Attaching the German article ‘das’or ‘the’ in English to ‘Uliman’,‘Dasuliman’ is derived. The company’s name is therefore imbued with the artistic vision and ideals of Jose Rizal from whom the University, where Teyatro Dasuliman is conceived, is named after; while reflecting its advocacy for ‘healing through the arts’, specifically through dramatic arts.
